Notes on How to Play Texas Hold ’em

These notes provide a beginner’s guide to playing No Limit Texas Hold’em, the most popular version of poker. The guide covers the hand rankings, the positions at the table, the betting rounds, and the stages of a hand, including the flop, turn, and river, and the final showdown. The dealer button is moved after each hand, and the small blind and big blind positions rotate clockwise to start the next hand.

My Notes:

  • The most popular version of poker is No Limit Texas Hold’em, which requires making the best five-card poker hand from the two cards you have been dealt and the five shared cards in the middle of the table.
  • Hand rankings start from high card to the Royal Flush, with a pair, two pair, three-of-a-kind, a straight, a flush, a full house, four-of-a-kind, straight flush, and Royal Flush.
  • Before the cards are dealt, the button, small blind, and big blind positions are established.
  • After being dealt two cards, the first betting round begins, and players can fold, call, or raise. If a player raises and everyone else folds, the hand is over.
  • The flop is the next stage, where three cards are dealt face-up in the middle of the table.
  • The second betting round starts with the first active player to the left of the dealer, and players can check, bet, call, raise, or fold.
  • If at least two players are still in the game, the turn stage is reached, and another card is dealt face-up in the middle of the table.
  • Another round of betting follows before the river card is dealt face-up.
  • The final betting round is followed by the showdown, where players show their cards, and the best hand wins all the chips in the pot.
  • The dealer button is moved one spot to the left after every hand, and the next hand begins with the small blind and big blind positions rotating clockwise.

These tips and notes are good for casual games with friends, or at more formal settings like casinos. I’m planning on testing my skill online at some Bitcoin cash casinos next week.
